Album Review: 'Youtubedemic' by SIC ILL

From the square waves represented in the first song, "iRepresent" to the phat beats of "Downtown Streets", there's no doubt, 'Youtubedemic' features a diverse range of audible content. This laid back, groovy, and fun compendium of slick and varied tunes has touches of Afroman and Gorillaz while maintaining a healthy dose of originality. As you listen more and more through the tunes, you begin to notice how many different sets of drums this artist goes over. Favorite tune so far is: City of Glass.

For those of you listening to this who are audiophiles, you might be turned off by the sounds used. The problem I sense with some of these tunes is that they feel a little cluttered; overwhelmed by bass. However, the creativity and arrangement of each tune, is enough to pull me through to the next track. It's a nice change, compared to most of the other rap I've been listening to; it gives it an authentic underground feel.

The way I look at it, production values and modern mixing is the icing on top of a cake. But sometimes, that icing can be laid on a little too thick and in turn would ruin the cake. Occasionally, you like that extra sugar but every so often, it's nice to take a step back and appreciate the baking process that took place.

I really enjoyed some of these tunes, and I'm glad I took the time to listen to it a few times over. It's creative, original, and it varies from tune to tune. For a free download, I'd say this is a nice find. :)

Album Review: Blu Collins by KDC

Hey all! New music!

All too often nowadays, rap is sort of a "toss-up". While you generally have a good idea of what you're going to hear when you know one particular artist, chances are it won't be the same experience when it's someone you don't know. When you picture rap, either you'll have the positive, enlightening rap that talks of personal experiences, downfalls, and general advice or you'll have the rap that talks of hoes, money, drugs, and the supposed good party life. To put it in short - with the help of my girlfriend - this is exactly what I mean.

Thankfully, KDC sheds his perspective on the world.

'Blu Collins' is the first LP produced and written by KDC and it marks the beginning of the artist's album streak. KDC has been a producer for the past 10 years and labels his music as alternative rap. The album has a very clean feeling; that is a nice surprise. That said, sometimes there's a time and place for the wrong words, but I digress. As I had a few moments to talk with the artist, he simply stated:

"With the latest project Blu Collins it includes more of a rhythmic melodic feel. I'd like to be seen as a positive artist with real life content that pertains to what I've been through and what I'm going through. I've been doing music for over ten years and I kind of just dove in."

There's some really interesting songs on here, such as "The Verdict". Some interesting hooks, smooth lines, and a clear message; I'm getting some pleasant vibes from these. It almost feels like Wiz Khalifa but more inspiring. It's like gangsta rap, but...promotes happy thoughts instead.  What a trip!

All of that said, there are some things I can hear that I would...like to hear better. The intro, "My Melody" features a radio-esque intro as if you're changing the stations, which is nice, except right after you're greeted by a THX sound clip that slowly moves into a beat with vocals that feature far too much delay. It's a spoken word intro that tells the purpose of this album however, this is probably the weakest point of the soundtrack.

This is an awesome first album that would appeal to plenty of rap/hip-hop enthusiasts. It's short, coming in at just over 30 mins long; it may even feel a little disjointed between songs but rest assured it's something to try out if you're sitting at your computer searching for music hours on end.

Album Review: 'Afrodisiac' by Teni

After just hearing the excellent vibes A-B-E provided, I figured we'd go into something even more diverse. Such a spectrum of music to cover, and I've only just scratched the surface of an otherwise endless range of melodic possibilities. It is truly astounding how much music can be produced on the internet, no one person could ever hear everything. Enter Teni, a London born singer and producer with a knack for creating smooth vibes across a range of genres. Included but not limited to: afrobeat, blues, and reggae.

Featuring 10 tracks and displaying a sexy cover that's styled very modern; showing bare skin...you get the idea that this album is close to the heart. Raw emotion being transferred here. Her voice is powerful and profound and it covers a wide range of frequencies. You can tell the emphasis was put on the vocals to display an uplifting, verbal experience. The artist's bio reads:

"Afrodisiac" is the debut album by London born soul singer and producer Teni who is influenced by Sade, Marvin Gaye and Fela Kuti and creates an eclectic fusion of afrobeat, jazz, funk and soul. Afrodisiac is a timeless, soulful, sensual inspired piece with sultry vocals, dirty bass lines and hypnotic afro guitars by this innovative singer-songwriter who explores new genres in her compositions. Her message of unity and upliftment and powerfully sensual live performance are sure to help her take the music world by storm..."

Starting out with the title track of the album, 'Afrodisiac', you really get a sense of what this artist is about: smooth basslines, sensual vocals, and raw talent. There's a few things I could say in criticism though: The vocals seem to overpower some of the tracks. The overwhelming presence can be a little distracting however, most of the tracks seem very well balanced. It's a style that fits well for the most part; the melodies are catchy yet, sometimes, I'm left feeling the dynamics on some of the samples are a little plastic-y. A good example would be "When Would It Be". Seems as though the track is made with an ethnic flair in mind however, the intro could have used better samples.

"When Will It Be"

However, with most of the songs - as I said - it's very, very smooth. Everything just seems to flow from one track to the next. I imagine myself sipping on some alcoholic beverage in a club sitting in a booth with some friends, talking about old memories. It's peaceful and it feels raw, in a good way. It's a special thing when an artist can create their own style, and bring something out into the world that no one else can.

"Wilderness"

This is probably my favorite song off the album. Being a big fan of reggae already, I dig the funky licks on the bassline and the Marley-esque peace vibes that emanate. Parts of this make me wish I could just plan a trip to Jamaica right now. The instruments used in this all feel very pleasant in my ears; it's mixed very well.

"Your Love is the Key"

The 3rd single from 'Afrodisiac', and this is probably the most popular track of the bunch. It features a four on the floor beat, and is very reminiscent of 80's house. I start imagining a more mellow D-Train, Jomanda, or Class Action. Very cool stuff. I picture bright clothes, large dancefloors, and neon colors sprayed everywhere. This is sure to be a beat that really gets the crowd moving.

Teni brings a unique variety of flavor to the world of afrobeat/jazz. Her style is diverse while at the same time reminiscent of artists she is influenced by. The few critiques I could make on her debut album are minuscule. I can say, with complete honesty, that I have not heard something like this before. Similar styles? Maybe. But this is a rich collection of songs that is both inspirational and appeasing to my ear lobes and is very well worth listening to. Try something new out; keep yourself open minded about the world of music because sometimes you might just overhear something you didn't expect and be transported into a new realm of genres.

The best part is, is she's all over the place! Unlike the last artist I reviewed, Teni has done quite a bit of social networking. She's on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Pick up a copy of 'Afrodisiac' today from iTunes, Amazon MP3, or just visit her personal website for a glimpse into her future endeavors: http://tenimusic.org

Artist/Single Review: "Real Wit Yaself feat. Melinna Bobadilla"

Let's face it.

Rap at its core - when it's good - is all about expression in the most soulful and elaborate way possible. Its depth is measured by the content heard in the lyrics and its production is systematically placed by utilizing harmonic blocks in a digital audio work space. When you're listening to hip-hop, the idea is to pass along a message in a unique approach as to create an exclusive signature. In other words, get people to say, "This s*** is dope."

The artist, A-B-E, does just that. From the start, we have some superb strings playing in the back with an expressive jazz guitar. The groove is polished and the drums are smooth; it carries the song until the vocals provide the melody telling a story along the way. More than its production values, this is a very inspirational song. From the title alone, the message is "to be yourself". Don't lose your values or dignity as a human being; each person has their own set of freedoms. The artist makes it clear that this song is meant to trigger motivation and inspire those with a less than a fond perspective of humanity.

...and on top of that, there are some sexy vocals spread out in-between sung by Melinna Bobadilla.

If you're into intelligent songwriting, captivating rhymes, smooth beats, and uplifting messages...A-B-E is someone to look out for. I really liked this track and I hope there will be more like it. The only thing I could say in criticism is that I wish it was available through more outlets such as Soundcloud or Bandcamp, since it's only on Spotify and iTunes for now. More outlets means more advertisement/exposure and this is an artist who deserves it.

Random YouTube Video: Texting, Talking, Checking Mail (TTCM) by BrothersP

Haven't spoken for a while, how's everyone doing?

Great, because here's something I found that's quite different. A comedy/country music song that focuses on the sole purpose of emphasizing the over usage of phones. Trying to go out on the date with a beautiful girl just isn't what it used to be and sometimes the phone can be a bastard.

Who knew?

I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of country (Johnny Cash, has and will always be exempt from this)...I listen to most things that are out there today and it just doesn't click. Comedy, is another genre though. Putting these two together in most cases...just seems like you'd be putting bread and mustard on your already well established pork and beans. But instead, you have Oreos and milk.

Overall, a good story; one that a lot of people will find enjoyable. The kind and polite gentleman meets a lady that has a phone plastered to her face. He continues to press forward with the date as the lady is exploring the latest apps. It's clever, the dialogue is witty and it features a number of varied backgrounds to keep the listener going!

Nearly 5 mins; starts to feel a little long, but this song is great! Albeit the lip syncing was a little strange, but given the nature of things...it's almost meant to be off in a comedic fashion. Everything makes sense, and gave me a good chuckle. Good work, BrothersP!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

I gotta say, more than anything else...this past week has been interesting. With a series of ups and downs...ranging from cleaning house to being rejected for a DJing performance, I have realized my marketing strategy is not working. It's a shame I won't be able to perform, sure....but, more than anything I'd very much like to attend this convention...and hang out with the people I've spent the past 4 years talking to and learning from.

There's so much I can say about MAGFest, it's hard to believe I haven't been there yet. From cosplayers, to video game remixers, to just web personalities such as the Angry Video Game Nerd...there is a LOT of variety and such a chance to network, rarely comes along.

...and while it's been nice building up my reputation as a composer/producer/blogger or whatever else, it's hard to come to terms with the fact that I haven't been able to meet the vast majority of this amazing and talented community. I would definitely not be where I am today, without their help.

This blog is definitely not a beg, and it's certainly not panhandling...but in order to continue my work/craft...

I need help...

In order to keep going on the current path I'm travelling:

- Get a website
- Create physical copies
- Better marketing strategy

These are all costly goods and I simply just...do not have the funds. With the amount of money I've had to use in order to get this far...I've just not been able to make ends meet.

So this post is pretty much a last resort, in any hope of getting to MAGFest. I can't promise anything at the moment...but I have worked on some pretty neat stuff lately. With time, I plan to have my own line up of candles and perler bead art, to add on to the "studios" portion of my business. So music, blogging, and other crafts will all become a part of the business I've tried to create and establish myself in.

...and if I had a functioning camera, I'd show you all right now what new items I've created.

However, I haven't a cent to my name currently to buy myself an SD Card reader.

So if any of you read this, and would like to help me get to MAGFest...I promise I will more than make up for your generous contributions. Releasing brand new music, candles, and whatever else comes to mind. Also, if anyone has an idea for new things you'd like to see me create (or remix?), please, leave a comment.

Thank you for your time, and as always...thanks for listening!

Some great new songs and a news update!

Quick thought before main blog: Why does everything become more complex throughout time?

Right, so...

News Update:

- Starting a Livestream (soon!)
- Extending the branch of blogs and writing services!
- Releasing a brand NEW album in December!

In addition, to the every growing pile of music (remixes and originals) I've been working on...I do plan to have both a remix EP released in November and a full length album release in December. The full length album is tentative, but...it stands at about 93.4% done. Things are looking good, and there are even plans to set up physical CD sales!

Also! I have joined Insert Coin Theatre's lineup of livestreamers. If you've never checked it out, it features Ben Briggs, Jehm_Faulking, and Mega Flare. Basically, with Twitch, anyone is allowed to stream whatever they want (to a degree, we're not talking Chatroulette here). Streaming video games seems to be all the craze lately, so guess I'll jump on the bandwagon! Or...maybe catch a glimpse of me working on some new music?

d(O.O)b

Who knows!

On top of that, as you may or may not have noticed...on OverClocked Remix, I will no longer be going by "Jakesnke17" everything (from top to bottom) is being switched to DjjD. Personally...I think it has a nice ring to it. Plus, dis artwork. I can haz use it.

(this is awesome)

Now then, let's get to some tunes!

Teminite - Neurology

As I started to post my request to join a particular original music compilation project...I started to look at the roster of musicians who were already participating. This is one of them. A young producer by the name of Teminite is making a name for himself. Arming himself with some absolutely groovy melodies and large chords, this is someone to watch out for. This is my personal favorite, but...there's quite a large selection of tracks there.

Stefan Torto - Canvas

Going in a completely different direction in the realm of electronica, here we have Stefan Torto...a chillout artist from Greece I've followed for quite some time now. So many deep textures, sometimes it's really quite astounding how the mix remains so clear. I'm a sucker for downtempo electronica that focuses on minimal beats and copious amounts of thick, wavy reverb. It's chill, it's groovy, and it's from Greece. Check it out!

BreakZhead - Disposis (Aggresivnes & FactorFunk Remix)

...and this has been one of my favorites for a while now. Why? Because it slams. So. Friggin'. Hard. Sure, the piano is a little...I dunno, stale? But when dem bass synths kick in, man...it's absolute chaos. I love how one of the remixers is called "Aggresivnes". Totally fits. This is a "slam you down, and wipe you across the floor" track that deserves a lot of love. Highly recommended.

and once again, that is it!

Seriously, if anyone's decided to read this, or at least listen to the music I link...I appreciate it so much. I'm constantly trying out new things so...call this blog an experiment (I think I've already said that). I'll still be writing as much as I can allow myself to do so but if I'm not...there's always music!

Artwork
Original artist: Kevin Villecco (an awesome guy). This is what the original artwork looked like:

and then my girlfriend rearranged it. :P

Thanks for reading everyone!

P.S. If you're reading this blog and you enjoy my music...or anything else. Please consider a donation as I'd love to keep doing this for a living. :)

New Remix, Fiverr Services, and more!

Let me just go onto say, that this post is everything I'm currently up to...and just bringing you all up to speed with what I'm doing.

As I've been talking about my own various life issues for the past several blogs and then turned to artist and album reviews...I figured, now would be a good a time as any for me to go over my other professions besides...jotting down random things and ideas. When I'm not blogging, and when I'm not thinking about what's next in the world of originals (or other non-vgm related remixes), I go by "Jakesnke17" on OverClocked Remix, the world's premier video game remixing site.

I've remixed at least 20+ different video game music pieces, ranging from classics such as Mario Bros. to Pokemon. Or Mega Man to Sonic. It's one of the most rewarding experiences, I believe. Such a vast wealth of knowledge placed in a community where one generation talks with the previous generation...and that follows suite all the way to the original composers, having them do interviews on the site for other upcoming remixers to read and learn.

After 4 years of spending my time there, it's cool to actually see the change and the rewarding "upgrades" that come with better teachers, more experienced composers, and just an overall happy fan basis that are as much interested as learning as they are chatting with each other.

 It's fascinating.

So...what's this about a new remix and what the hell is Fiverr? In OCRemix, large scale projects are organized to recreate a new imagining of what the game might sound like in a particular genre, mood, or just with modern production values. The latest one I was a part of? Gunstar Heroes: Be Aggressive

The album is a 24 track, 2 disc album that covers the majority of the game's themes and I've gotta say the originals in this game were some of the craziest pieces of music I've ever heard. It's intense stuff. So without saying too much more, here's my track:

As far as Fiverr goes, if you've never heard of it before...just picture it as a standardized eBay (Buy It Now) of $5, no matter what product or service the customer is receiving. Everything only costs $5 (at least, to start with). Despite the very obvious criticism I have with this service (they take out $1 every $5), it's well worth using if you're trying to get a little bit of business and you didn't know where to start. For myself, I'm offering a few things, a tutorial in FL Studio, a pair of ringtones composed by me, and a couple others. It's a fun little service and totally worth checking out if you've got a particular skill that you're really good at.

Now...

For the fun part.

You know that "...more!" I put at the end of the title? Well, this is it. Enjoy a secret clip of a current wip.

...and well, that's pretty much all I've got! There's a Fiverr link down at the bottom, it'll lead you to all the services if you're interested.

What is home?

All it took was a short while at the computer, a viewing of Sherlock (BBC) with my girlfriend, a cup of tea, and the rarest of all things...a short burst of clarity and peace of mind. The moments they occur, should always be remembered.

...and so I ask again: What is home?

Home is a location, a feeling, a set of memories, or a community of people in which you share good times with. When home, comforts of life seem to be at an absolute maximum. But what if you were never feeling those good moments at home, what if your life became a vague blur from day to day, drowning out your normal daytime routine into a swirling disc of confusion and aggravation...

That sentence might have gone a tad bit too far. Sorry, let's try again.

The question I'm asking is: What is the beginning of the tipping point of the "last straw" that begins our spiral into depression?

I guess that question can't really be given a clear answer as its vague appearance makes it way into all of our lives, differently. When I think home, I think childhood memories, fun in the sun, and general happiness...but as all good things end...those memories begin to fade. It's a natural part of life but sometimes you begin to wonder, humans didn't always have these types of trouble invading their daily life. In fact, their primal instinct and way of survival depended on accuracy and speed of only their capable body, not more than 2.9 million years ago.

When did people become so civilized that their own thoughts on financial matters frighten them? Since when did the attention span of the human mind so intelligently shrink to that of a 7 second Vine video? These weren't relevant thoughts at the time of the Stone Age.

...ok, I admit that video was hilarious.

Sometimes I just wish human curiosity would've gone farther without the greed and personal gain factor to it, it's like a byproduct of ingenuity. Cash, paper money...I can think of no greater motivator to invent something new. Even right now, I'm selling my services as a composer/producer on another site...and I'm just making basic ringtones. I have to stop to think...how much can I make off of this, so I can determine if my living situation is still sustainable and I can pay back my own debts.

I truly hate it.

What a long way from the topic I've strayed, heh. As I feel I'm going through levels of topics that have been on my mind, it's funny to notice I didn't think about it...until I started to think about home. So I guess with all of that said, I'd love to hear some comments on the topic...if anyone has anything to share. :)

Midnight Sound Service - Imperium In Imperio (Bluetech Remix)

I've always liked Bluetech's material, and this is no exception. He always has an intro that sucks you in, and when you finally get to the meat of the song, you'll be blown away by how many layers of awesomeness are entering your cranium.

Disco Dan - Green Amnesia [Green Memories]

This has gotta be one of my favorite songs of all time, right here. I talked about video game music and remixes in one of my last blog posts but I guess, what I can say here...is that this is one of the remixes that inspired me to begin remixing myself. More than that, it showed me how to form a song, really make an engaging intro to get people into it. You can find it, right here. Recommended as always. :)

and finally: Ulrich Schnauss - Monday (Paracetamol)

Simply amazing stuff...also, amazing fan video put together by Nikolaj Christensen. That's all I've got on this one, it's just an awesome track.

Thanks for listening!

Album Review: Take Me Back To America

Received an interesting set of music today here at DjjD Studios headquarters. While I've never been really knowledgeable about R&B music, it's always fascinated me in a way that few genres can. Something about the chill vibes, the memorable basslines, and sensual vocals have always gotten to me. It's some of the most mood invoking material, and while blues may have been a major inspiration, R&B maintains its own feel with positivity and relaxation. King Fernand Family, born and raised in New York City, makes his own statement in the world of R&B with "Take Me Back To America", reflecting his love for this dear country. Featuring 8 Urban/Hip-Hop/Rock songs and with an impressive distribution lineup (Amazon & Google Play), he's certainly gotten his music around.

All of the tracks have a certain reggae, downtempo feel. You can hear the influences of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley as the guitar shreds; the song speaks of peaceful intentions. I can wholeheartedly hear this album as part of a 90's surfer soundtrack or as part of a Sublime remix compilation.

It took me a few listens to really get into the swing of things, but overall a worthwhile listen.

Let's go into a few of the tracks:

"Take Me Back To America"

The first moments of the song, reminisce of an older, wiser New York city. The feels of this song put you in the slums or the business districts of that old American city in slow motion just so you can explore the world around you. It's your first time in the city, unknown to everyone...you wander.

"Charisma"

The 2nd of two songs he sent me initially...totally different vibe with this one. Featuring a more prominent guitar role, the "rock" genre label for this album, stands true. A very classic rock vibe with a downtempo type beat great for a slow moving "get-together".

Only enough room for 2 tracks this time, unfortunately...however the whole album (as stated above) is available at Amazon & Google Play.

Overall: While, I'm no professional in this department of music and have never concerned myself with R&B before now, I enjoyed this album. It has potential in all the right places, the production is clean (most times), the live instrumentation is enjoyable, and (for the most part) the vocals are a nice addition. There's good to be found in most music in the sense, you'll hear a sound you'd never thought you'd hear. While most people put their concerns in production & arrangement (and rightly should), it's important to take notice of the human creative spirit and see the roots of where music really comes from.

Soul Music in every sense of the word.

I give this album a 4.3 out 5 rating.

Artist Review: Adolfo Baez

Personally, I find it quite incredible when someone takes the time to perfect their craft and make something truly outlandish. It says to the world that you've got a skill and you're one of the relative few, who decided to act upon an impulse and create something unique for everyone.

Video game compositions are an incredible art within the world of music. It's taking one piece of established creation and merging it with another entirely different form of art. Pictures, turned moving animations, furnished into large scale landscapes with impressive, prophetic compositions that change an otherwise lifeless set of pixels...into a fully realized historical treasure.

I love video games, and I can see when someone appreciates my shared vision through video game music remixing...which, is another art form in itself. You have skilled talent that took the time to create the original, and then you have adept new age composers who praise that original talent by taking "source material" and transforming it into something completely new.

It takes a special person to realize what hell the original talent had to go through to make things as sound as good as they did back then.

However, this is where Adolfo Baez takes it to the next level...

By taking two steps back...

Despite all the new equipment composers/producers of the world have at their disposal today, Adolfo Baez, prefers the comforts of a simple, more stable digital audio workstation called "Mario Paint Composer". What year is that release, you might ask? 2007? 2011?

Wrong.

August 1, 1992. I was two years old
...and while I didn't get to play the game until I was 4-5 years older, I knew that the game had one of the most kickass flyswatting mini-games known to mankind, at that time.

The idea behind making music within a video game that a composer probably programmed as a joke...just shows you how much time was (most definitely) spent on polishing what seems to be another...mini game. Adolfo's arrangements range from 2 mins long to an impressive 15-20 mins long. They are
all jam-packed with plentiful, nostalgic etudes from an age of video games...future generations will look upon as relics.

It's hard to say that last sentence. It's hard to feel as though memories I have, are now limited to be relative to anyone who isn't in my current generation or...perhaps two generations younger.

But it explains why, when I came across Adolfo's music...I felt like a piece of that "relic" became more real again. Images started flaring up, and I could see myself playing with the largest video game coloring book again; ended up looking like this.

I don't know if this guy realizes what positive light was shed when I came across his craft, and I don't even know if he'll read this blog but I can say through his music, he's doing a service for everyone who happens to stop by his YouTube page and click "Play". Seeing the program he's using, hearing the timbre of each note...is an enlightening look into the past.

If you've ever cared about video games and the music that was designed for them, you owe it to yourself to check out this guy's music and be amazed by the "Inception-esque" way of remixing he does.

Personal Blog #1

So I was thinking about these blogs a lot lately...

Of course, after 7 blogs one assuredly asks himself...."What do I have to talk about that's interesting?"

...and after 30 mins, a blank stare at the monitor leaves my ideas rendered futile. You can imagine for that each time I sit down to write one of these blogs I have nearly the same set of guidelines each time:

  1. Write 500 words
  2. Make an interesting topic
  3. Find some good music
I'm not saying any one of those parts is more difficult than the other, but....wait, no. That's exactly what I'm saying. The interesting topic of this blog is always the hardest. Like many others, I, a lone traveler on the vast plains of Chrome and Mozilla, search endlessly for entertaining things to satisfy my insatiable boredom. For which, there is no cure...only treatment.

I've scoured the internet for hours upon hours, my patience wears thin for new, exciting content and after 9 hrs/day, nothing is entertaining anymore. My head becomes a stainless steel soup bowl, swishing back and forth with little care for South Park or FL Studio.

I've seen enough blogs at this point, to know, that if the content starts with "I walked today. It was raining so I went inside. Made some toast. Then I went to play some games..."

I'm probably not going to read the rest of that blog. Why? My mind works like a Brazilian conga line...if it isn't making me bump and jiggle, then there's probably no point in continuing.

So as you begin to see this formula in my blog writings...you've got to imagine I'm looking at the world like a director. It's not enough to simply endure things naturally occurring in life...as a person looking to recount and tell these stories later, you have to remember:

  • How you were feeling at the time
  • Precise moments leading up to, during, or in the aftermath
  • Notice how others were feeling
Details, are the spice of life, and if things aren't specific and generally relatable towards readers, they're gonna notice (consciously or unconsciously) and be uninterested. Imagery is key to progressing the reader's knowledge on the subject. Like downloading or uploading, the final result can only be obtained by speed. The more clean-cut the facts, the faster the transfer.

So who am I to say that most of the content on World Wide Web cyberspace is crap and why is my opinion any tad bit relevant? It's probably not, and I can imagine a lot of people think the exact same things considering there's 156 million blog pages in existence today.

But...

We all have to place our crappy feelings or ideas somewhere, I guess I just prefer mine in an air conditioned warehouse, housing over 33 trillion database entries every year. That sounds secure as...this (and it probably is).

Alright, just one song today. :)

D Chain - Rain Forest (ForeSpace Remix)

This song has just for some reason stuck with me. Reminiscent of when I first heard deadmau5, this song draws upon a minimal feel. It feels light as a cloud while keeping you grounded because of the dynamic drum work. As this is a free track, this should be a good find for any EDM fan.

It's all....part of the plan.

I'll be honest, the past few days have been a blur. Sleep schedule constantly changing and lack of food, has rendered me in a completely different state of mind. I feel healthier to a degree, but it does bring up some questions. Why did my schedule change so dramatically? Did the outside weather affect this new found consciousness? (I probably drank too much coffee.)

The answer is: cycles

Change happens, your body reacts.

Sometimes you might not notice it at first, but it affects you. When you hear a faint noise in the distance but don't know where it's coming from...you don't know how or why, but you feel different. It's along the same lines as hearing a small mouse gnaw at something, and you can't tell which direction. Maybe it's a disconnected feeling, maybe it's a more closely attached feeling...but when an "event" happens, your body responds.

Last week, my dog, Brownie (15 yr. old Chihuahua) died in her sleep, after suffering many months of a large tumor under her belly. We didn't have the money to take care of the situation.

For a family member, initial feelings of guilt invaded the mind, followed by regret, and ended with depression.

Now...I wasn't a huge fan of this dog. I have very recent memories of her doing nothing but whining at the bathroom door, whining for food, barely moving, letting #1 or #2 on the carpet (right in front of me), and sometimes straight up confused about where she was. But...I never wished death upon her.

It's hard to explain, I wasn't emotionally phased by her death in a negative light...I try to imagine she's in a better place and her pain is gone. The only time it really affects me is when I look at her bed while I'm passing by the living room to get to the kitchen. You just notice that something...

...is different.

A living thing that was right there, vanished in the blink of an eye.

Being there, right there to discover it happen...made an impression on me. While I'm shocked by her death, I'm also enlightened by change. At one end, she was old and couldn't do much on her own, but on the other end, she was a roadblock to making any progressive change because so much care was being taken of her.

Today I found myself cleaning for 6 hrs. Doesn't happen often.

Change is an odd thing. There are those of us to make the jump right into change, some of us who talk about change, afraid of the unknown...and then there are simply some of us who wait for change to find us.

Right, so here's part of my playlist for today's cleaning:

Aesop - Smoker's Anthem

A hip hop song that emphasizes vibes inspired off of Cheech & Chong and "Low Rider" and embraces the idea of...well, you know. You don't need to be a botanist to figure out what this song is about. Promoting the happy commotion, whether you're a fan of the topic or not, this song is sure to invoke a more lively, upbeat community at your party, hangout, or camping trip.

Mindset - Jakarta (Original Mix)

As summer is ending, it is only fitting that I find a song...to call an anthem of this summer. I'm two years late but this song made an impression on me this year. Glowing textures, beautiful soundscape...you can practically feel the wind blow across your face bringing that cool oceanic breeze. This song gives me hope for electronica, as it is original as it is memorable for giving that early 90's trance vibe. Really good stuff, I always look forward to hearing more of Mindset.

Jens Felger - a poem

I haven't followed this artist for a long time, but from what I've heard, it's some pretty emotional classical guitar. While you're busy watering your garden, cleaning house, or simply taking a hike to enjoy the beauty in the world that is nature...listen to this song. It'll be memorable.

As always, thanks for reading.

Album Review: Eye of the Storm by Flexstyle

As this marks the first, full length album review...

It's nice to open up with an album I've listened to time and time again. Michael Birch (a.k.a. Flexstyle) has been a force to be reckoned with for years. With his time on ACIDPlanet, to Overclocked Remix, to finally making it on the Electro Freaks label...the guy has made his way to some pretty big names and projects with humility and elegance. His ability to combine different elements of music shows he's a diverse artist with a knack for big beats and progressing melodies. I find myself inexplicably thumping my foot and therefore it begs the question, "How does he do it?"

Identifying himself with both EQ mastery and catchy hooks, Flexstyle will continue to make a name for himself.

Now then, let's get started shall we?

Eye of the Storm

#1: Unvanquished (Prologue): What a soothing way to start an album. It tells the long path ahead and gives the notion of the dangers that pass with each footstep. You find yourself in a deep jungle, at the edge of the universe, and somehow in the comforts of your home all at the same time. Your mind begins to wander...

#2: Voltage: This...

Well I remixed this one.

That said, this is easily one of the most powerful tracks on the album. Unleashing an entirely new feeling of adventure and excitement, the standout drums and crunchy background pads fill the soundscape with explosive chords and electrified bells. I can't get enough of it. There's definitely a catchy melody in this one and if this song doesn't cause some myoclonic jerks in your feet...the next song surely will.

#3: Chaos Prime: The moment I listen to this, I get a sense of danger. The people on this quest...have just encountered their first enemy, a ruthless being who seeks nothing but to create destruction and turmoil. As the adventurers go unnoticed, they pass through Chaos Prime and enter an entirely new civilization...

#4: Agua Fria: An ancient race of beings who's existence has long past...the large bass, the deep wispy pads, and the chugs of the guitars leave you wondering if this place is safe. Have you traveled too far? Where are the denizens of this age-old world? This is an excellent track.

#5: Triumph of Innocence: Whoa, drum and bass everybody, hold your colour (please tell me you guys got that reference). This is certainly a colorful track. Hi-hats a plenty, pitched bass drops, and a full blown half-time section along with those electrified bells first seen in Voltage. At the risk of sounding like an anime fanatic (for which I can assure you, I am certainly not), this reminds me of Dragonball Z. Yes, the English dub ones, they're the only ones that are any good. Explosive track, this one. One of the highlights of this album, folks. Check it.

#6: A Quiet Literary Interlude: You needed a break after that last track? Me too, and I think Flexstyle realized that too. This track certainly lives up to the title of the album as this is most assuredly the "Eye of the Storm". Utilizing a trip-hop type beat, vocoded textures, and various snap, pops, and stutters through sliced, glitched beats...this track is incredibly soothing.

#7: Frostbite: In recent times, this track was promoted all over his Soundcloud, for a contest. As for this version...what a track. I'd say this is the heaviest track on the album. Keep your toes covered, this one bytes.

Note: Producers, grab those stems, they're still available. :D

#8: Supernova: With this one, I see some new sounds being used. The chippy, 8-bit sound makes its way into Flexstyle's production. With numerous elements going for it (along with being the longest track on the album), this track begs to be played on a large sound system. It's a journey through and through.

#9: Weeping Clouds feat. Hollidayrain: What a collaboration. Both prolific producers in their own right, Hollidayrain teams up with Flexstyle for a one of a kind progressive house tune that is both huge and long (that's what she said), wait..

Case in point, this track bangs. Hard.

#10: With Friends Like These: Are your friends in the Ming Dynasty? Flexstyle seems to think so. This track embraces the more organic, ethnic inspired vibes of the broad electronica genre. Very interesting contrast between this and the last track.

#11: Eye of the Storm, Part 1: Escape: Like the intensity of "Triumph of Innocence"...we see our 2nd drum 'n bass inspired track of the album. This has gotta be one of the most light-hearted "escape" tracks I've ever heard. You begin to realize at this point, this adventure was one of self discovery and...oh my, that is a beautiful solo around half of this track. Right, where was I? Listen to this track.

#12: Eye of the Storm, Part 2: Aftermath: Introducing the same feeling as the previous track, this one is a bit more mellow. It is the beginning of the end for our travelers...and what a expedition it's been.

#13: Resolution (Epilogue): You stand on top of a mountain, the highest peak in a land far, far away...you recount your travels with your friends and you look at the world...a changed person. A little more wiser, you continue on your next trip...eager for the unknown.

#14: Weeping Clouds feat. Hollidayrain (PrototypeRaptor Remix): As the result of another contest held by Flexstyle...PrototypeRaptor took 1st place. This track takes what was already established in the original and bumps it up to 8.3 on the Richter scale. Excellent remix.

Overall: While this album is getting close to two years old, it's one I still treasure to this day. Judging on both the concept of this album and the production, this is a very clean and well thought out product. When you're looking for new electronica to listen to and you don't know where to start, this review should be an indication that...through the cracks and crevices of the internet, there is gold to be found for those who take the time to search.

I give this album a 5 out of 5 rating.

Thank you for reading.

I'm just a simple guy, asking questions. Questions for the asking.

I had a lot of time to think today. During my stay in an ER room, I had time to ponder the finer things in life...while watching Mrs. Doubtfire on CMT. But as the day progressed, I started to think...what would happen if I was really in an emergency. What would I be able to do to help myself recover?

I'm a pretty big fan of parties and the overall social experience. I like hanging out with friends just as much as any other guy, but...when it came to last Saturday, I can best describe my experience as..."too much." What I mean by that was...I was so into the mood of things that I lost my perception of what the consequences might be. I didn't restrain myself and I didn't limit my actions...so therefore, I drank way too much.

At the time, it felt really nice. I was light as a feather and every ping pong ball I threw into a red Dixie cup felt like perfection.

That is until the next day...

Headache, sore throat, stomach problems, etc. You name it, I had it.

As the day progressed, my condition felt worse. I hadn't had anything to eat and my body felt limp. My stomach kept growling but I just ignored it. Eventually, my friends invited me over the next day and I felt an uneasy feeling about the idea. I was hungry, but at the same time...wasn't. Something had gotten to me that day, and as I started to make hamburgers...I felt very lightheaded. Dizziness was a prevalent symptom too.

When all was said and done, I engorged myself with 2 hamburgers (full of ranch, hot sauce and peppers), a chicken patty, 2 helpings of Bush's Baked Beans and 3 large glasses of water. It was delicious and although I'd just eaten a ton of food...I still had this sickly feeling. It persisted from that day, until today. The pain moved from the center, to one part of my digestive tract, prominently on the right side and there...it stayed.

I feared for the worst this morning. Everyone fears the unknown.

Turns out, the entire 6 hour stay at the ER was...because I was full of shit. Literally.

So is there a life lesson to be learned out of this? I really can't say. What I do know, is that I now have a responsibility to take care of my body as much as possible. Things could've been a lot worse, and although it wasn't, I don't take that for granted. I've had some very close friends at this point who've experienced a lot worse than me and I'm grateful for my current state of health.

Take care of your body, it's the only one you have.

Right, onto happier music.

Here's my three picks for today:

First up: Beats Antique - Catskillz (JPOD Remix)

If there's something that can be said about this artist, it's that he has consistently bouncy textures, dynamic percussion, and catchy melodies. I honestly can't get enough of it. This might not qualify as your average party music, nor can it be classified as anyone genre but, it is definitely very intricately crafted electronica. Therefore you should listen to this and support this artist.

Next up: The Crystal Method & Riot Games - Lucian

If you're an electronic music fan, and you've been alive for the past 20 years, The Crystal Method should be a name you recognize almost immediately. The group is synonymous with big beats, phat textures, and well...truly creates the "Name of the Game". Check out this track, and be amazed

and last but not least: The M Machine - A King Alone (Robotaki Remix)

I've had the great privilege to see Robotaki grow as an artist. From humble beginnings on OverClocked Remix and unfinished remixes that...have become legend on the site, such as the infamous "Manoria Cathedral Revamp", to now...making a remix for one of the biggest acts in electronic dance music...there's nothing this guy can't do. An unbeatable groove, happy feelings, and chillin' vocals...this makes the list. Awesome work dude.

That's all for today, I'll definitely be taking a little bit of a break from blogging. Need to finish some music myself.

Thanks for tuning in. :)

Sellouts? What are they? Who qualifies as one?

I had a conversation yesterday that was quite peculiar. It's a touchy subject and one that needs explaining. How or why? I have no idea. But I'll begin by telling you, the term "sellout" has been used by almost everyone of my friends and most likely...all of your friends too.

What determines if someone is a sellout?

First: "sellout" (as described by everyone's favorite dictionary, Urban Dictionary): is an artist who conforms to the way record labels or managers see them to make money through commercial success and generally not the original fan base.

Now, being a struggling musician myself, I run everything I do on my own with no help from any outside source. Outside sources being...signed to a label, run by a manager, or being hassled or swindled for money from bigger corporations. I run every aspect of my business (because it's my business) and do what I can to make sure my music is heard. Twitter, Facebook, Soundcloud, and YouTube are all major key components in the music game but, I can understand when an artist is down on his luck...and needs to find a source of income. Why do labels exists? The same reason online social networking exists: advertisement.

The conversation I had with this genuine fellow, was about the rap group, "Atmosphere". Being no stranger to this artist, I felt thrilled someone else shared my enthusiasm about good music. A few members in the chat were praising this artist based on his lyrics, impeccable sense of "groove" and overall originally of compositions.

Until another person came in the chat shouting, "Yeah, he'd be great if he wasn't such a SELLOUT!"

Something snapped in my brain when I heard that. I felt as though, I...truly didn't know how to describe a sellout myself. So I began to question this individual who...had been, "high in the clouds". Was it pointless to start this argument? Possibly.

As it proceeded to go on and on, I searched up facts about the group, Atmosphere. All facts pointed to the same thing. Atmosphere was a group of rap artists who had been in the world of underground rap music for nearly the past 10 years and when they finally had the finances, they started their own label, "Rhymesayers Entertainment."

So not only did this group make their own music...they made their own label. I started to notice some similarities between myself and this group. They run everything themselves too.

So I guess the moral of this story is...check your facts. More importantly, know exactly what you're talking about before you say...what you "think" might be right.

My good friend, Jeroen Tel made a quote a few days ago, that sums up this mess of a blog...perfectly:

"The difference between -being right- and -thinking you could be right- is the difference between -breathing- and -holding your breath- (guess which one of each outlasts the other). Politics has a way with -holding it's breath-."

Thanks for listening, I'll end this blog with one of my favorite recent Atmosphere songs.

New Beginnings and New Music

Well, here it is...

The first blog post in almost a decade. I can't believe Blogger actually kept this blog active. When I tried to create a new one, it was all like...PSYCH!
You already have one.

I can't say it made a whole lot of sense at first but hey, less work on my part. Now to explain the whole reason/goal of this blog. I've been told for over a decade that I've known where to find good music and make it available to people through my own personal understanding of "groove". Groove? Why did you just say groove?

I'll tell you why.

Every person in the world has their own "groove". How much that groove appeals to other people is completely random. When you're a child you figure out what you like, what you don't like and you base your personality off of those things you cherish when you get older. The "groove" of which I speak is the natural balance your brain has with music and how that balance can connect with other people. If you're sitting there listening to Moonlight Sonata, there's a very good chance your "groove" is not gonna connect with someone that's listening to Insane Clown Posse.

This blog will feature new music I find almost every week (if I can). I hope I can provide material here which will later become your favorite artists, albums, or even genres.

So with all that out of the way, introduction complete.

Song Review....Initiate!

These are 3 amazing new songs I have found over the past few days.

First on the list: Mr. Bill and Protostar - Asymmetric

This song is simply astounding, the amount of variation...the constant ideas. I really had to search through my archives to try to find something I could relate this to...and honestly? Nothing came close. Blending of glitch hop, neurofunk, and djent guitars...is such an unholy union that feels so right. I have followed Mr. Bill for some time now, and everytime I hear something of his on Soundcloud...there are no words that come to mind. Highly recommended.

Second on the list: Shelter - Two of Us

Amazing. This might be the shortest song of this list but it packs an emotional punch, with an unwavering sub bass...that sucks you right into a black hole of confusion but relaxation. I don't know how I've never heard of Shelter before but he also goes by "Space Laces" (which you can find here). The feelings that might have gone into this song, must have been powerful. It's truly inspiring stuff.

and last but not least: Ugress - Spider Eyes (Spider Man Theme)

Well, I'm always down for a little funkity funk. Nothing sets the mood right more than a couple of swung strings, some sexy jazz flutes, and rhodes (on fire, yo). This is especially awesome. Why, you ask? I was a 90's child...you need not concern yourself further with my love of Sunday morning Marvel cartoons. In fact, I think it's quite self-explanatory. This theme dragged me through the first 10 years of my life with hopes of being a superhero and saving all the hot womenz...nonsense, I was only 12. I wasn't thinking of women, was I? Hell no, I was thinking "Why the hell can't I shoot webs out my hands?" This song is amazing, check it out.

...and this is where I draw my first post to a close. I'll try to update this as much as I can, but you can be sure this is gonna be constant...even if it's one post every two weeks. I have more music than I can possibly hope to share within the next 5 years of my life.

Thanks for reading everyone! Stay tuned!
